Steps to Follow When Sending Resume and Cover Letter

1. Follow the guidelines

One of the first steps is to follow the directions provided by the company when applying for a position. It is important for you to first read all the guidelines. Like the file format in which they want your resume, portfolio, cover letter (mandatory or not).

You should check if they want you to fill a form or you can send your application directly to the given email Id. It is highly recommended to follow all the instructions to get your application shortlisted.

2. Email Body

Most often candidates write the same thing in the email body that is already written in their cover letter (if sending any). The recruiter doesn’t have this much time to read your whole story again you should only include the most relevant details and always remember to keep it short.

4. Attaching files

This should be done without saying. Don’t miss your attachments. It is good to send a cover letter with a resume. Try not to be too repetitive in your email body and cover letter. Both serve a different purpose.

Always name your attachments properly, give them a name with meaning for example firstname_lastname_resume.pdf and firstname_lastname_coverletter.pdf. You can name it according to your preference but it should be meaningful.

The best way to send your documents is in PDF form. As it is a universally accepted format, easy to open and it will not change your formatting. Try to keep your file size smaller than 10MB.

5. Signature

At the bottom of your email body include your name with contact details so that recruiter can contact your easily. You can include your phone number, email id, LinkedIn profile.

6. Spell check

Before you send your email do spellcheck. An email with spelling or grammatical errors makes a bad impression. So before sending get it checked maybe by your friend or family.

Proofreading is a must before sending. You can also do a test by sending and downloading your documents to check whether everything is fine or not.

Effective Subject Line When Emailing Your CV

When sending a job application, the first thing that a recruiter sees is the subject line. Your subject line will decide that whether the receiver will read your email or not.

It should be attractive yet simple at the same time. You should follow the instruction if any written for the subject line. If nothing is given you can go with the standard format or you can also add some eye-catching data in your subject line.

1. When you are emailing your resume check whom you are sending if you know the name of the person it is good to add one. It gives a more personal touch if you do not know the name that you can go with writing sir/mam.

2. Your email address which you are using, should be professional. Do not use an email address that looks meaningless. Try to use your name or maybe your last name in your email address. This is easy to understand and navigate. If you do not have such an email address you can create one.

3. You can search for some sample emails with resume attachments or some sample emails with resumes written in the body. This will give you an idea and help you in writing your email.

4. After all is done send a test mail to yourself. Check if everything is ok or not in your email body, attachments like download them and check if they are coming in the right format, etc. When all looks good send your email.
