Should you Add your Resume to LinkedIn?

LinkedIn is a professional networking site. You can use it to connect with potential employers and widen your job search. Your LinkedIn profile is akin to your resume or CV. Then the question comes why should you add your CV separately.

LinkedIn profile and your resume share many similarities but they are not altogether same. A resume is meant to target a specific job position. Apart from it, there are a few other benefits of uploading your CV to your LinkedIn profile. These are:

  1. A properly formatted document is more presentable and appealing. You can use it to highlight certain points of your career.
  2. Many recruiters want a document for their records as LinkedIn profile keeps on changing.
  3. Many companies list their job openings on LinkedIn and you can directly apply to these positions by uploading your resume.

Your profile is likely to get noticed more by recruiters if you upload a recent resume and regularly update your work profile. LinkedIn profile shows many other things that cannot be documented in a CV like your connections, groups, and presentations. Being active on LinkedIn will help you get noticed by the recruiters.

There are some disadvantages of adding the resume as well. Let’s take a look at some of them.

  1. Privacy Issue – Usually contact details like your name,  address, phone number, email id are part of a CV. If you choose to attach your resume, your contact information will become public. In addition, your previous employer’s details will too get public. Furthermore, if the resume contains some sensitive data, the risk will become more. You should analyze your specific situation before uploading your resume.
  2. Redundant Data – Your LinkedIn profile contains many things that your resume has. Putting the same information twice is not really required. Your CV should be short and specific to the position applied for.
  3. Access to all – When you sync your copy of your resume on LinkedIn profile, anyone can view and download a copy from your profile. This may create a problem for you in the future.

Conclusion

Both your LinkedIn profile and resume are useful for career progression. In some ways they are complementary to each and both have their own advantages  It’s totally up to you to upload your CV on LinkedIn or not, but I would strongly suggest you to tailor your resume for specific job positions.

It is generally advisable to tailor your resume as per the requirements of a job. If you apply for a job on LinkedIn using a general purpose CV, you may lose the chance of putting your best foot forward as same resume for every job posting might hamper your chance of getting selected. To overcome this, you can send a targeted resume using “Easy Apply” as described in the option 2 above. You should check my other article on how to make a good resume for getting shortlisted for a job.

While applying for a job, you should include your LinkedIn profile URL in the resume. It will help you to get attention of the recruiters. If you want, you can also customize your Linkedin profile URL.

Over to You

LinkedIn is a powerful platform for career oriented professionals and job seekers.

Have you used LinkedIn to apply for jobs? Was it helpful? Do you think addition of CV will help you in your job search further.

I would love to hear from you.

My best wishes for landing a good job.
